yay - i finally got my little checkered girl to eat a pinkie today! i've had her for about a month, and i've tried to give her pinkies a couple of times with no luck. this time i scented it with a live goldfish, put it and her in a seperate cage (since she's so used to eating from her water dish in her own cage) and she went right for it! i want to give her a varied diet, and since frozen pinkies are so cheap and easy to store, i'm glad she finally sees them as food.
just had to share the good news :)

Congratulations! Our two baby checkereds took pinky pieces immediately last fall, but that isn't always the case, even with a species that is supposedly quite willing to take mice like the checkered garter snake. Scenting with live fish seems to work better than scenting with, say, frozen fish fillet. With any luck it'll take and she'll eat mice more ferociously than any rat or gopher snake.

We've always had luck hiding the pinky in a small pile of earthworms. The snakes would eat the worms and then find the pinky and grab onto it.

It's always exciting when a baby finally takes a pinky!!! :)

Jonathan, I have to ask you...you mentioned pinky pieces. Do you mean just cutting off the legs & tail or do you...uh...cut it up further?

I've never been brave enough to cut open a pinky other than to cut off its legs and tail.

If you do completely cut up a pinky, is it pretty gross & messy?

The trick is to chop them up frozen. (We cut them in half lengthwise -- yes, through the head. From there you can cut them up as small as eighths.) They congeal as they thaw, so it's not nearly as messy as it sounds.

thanks for the info. still sounds yucky but not as bad as I thought.

Do you let them thaw at room temp? Normally I defrost by placing the pinkies in warm water.

I usually get delagated to pinky chopping duties around our place and I find that it's best to just let'em thaw at room temperature....in fact, unless we need to quickly thaw out a mouse/pinky or heat it up (as in the case for our ball python baby) we alwayz thaw at room tepmerature. If we do use water, it's in a sealed baggy so the mouse doesn't get all soggy....pinky pieces would really get gross that way tho....I use tweezers to handle them (the pieces) and drop them into deli cups for the checkereds and red sided garters.
